چکیده
This is an outline for the course “Reasoning with Probabilities” taught at the European Summer School for Logic, Language and Information in Bordeaux, France on July 26 31, 2009 (ESSLLI 2009). This document contains an extended outline of the course including pointers to relevant literature. The course website: ai.stanford.edu/∼epacuit/classes/esslli/epprob.html will contain the slides and a schedule (updated each day). Enjoy the course and please remember to ask questions during the lecture!

Comprehension of factual, nonfactual, and counterfactual conditionals by Iranian EFL learners
A considerable amount of studies have been established on conditional reasoning supporting mental model theory of propositional reasoning. Mental model theory proposed by Johnson- larid and Byrne is an explanation of someone's thought process about how something occurs in the real world. Conditional reasoning as a kind of reasoning is the way to speak about possibilities or probabilities. The a...
متن کاملHaim Gaifman Reasoning with Limited Resources and Assigning Probabilities to Arithmetical Statements
There are three sections in this paper. The first is a philosophical discussion of the general problem of reasoning under limited deductive capacity. The second sketches a rigorous way of assigning probabilities to statements in pure arithmetic; motivated by the preceding discussion, it can nonetheless be read separately. The third is a philosophical discussion that highlights the shifting cont...
متن کاملRevisiting the Semantics of Interval Probabilistic Logic Programs
Two approaches to logic programming with probabilities emerged over time: bayesian reasoning and probabilistic satisfiability (PSAT). The attrac tiveness of the former is in tying the logic programming research to the body of work on Bayes networks. The second approach ties computationally reasoning about probabilities with linear programming, and allows for natural expression of imprecision i...
متن کاملInstance-based Non-standard Inferences in EL with Subjective Probabilities
For practical ontology-based applications representing and reasoning with probabilities is an essential task. For Description Logics with subjective probabilities reasoning procedures for testing instance relations based on the completion method have been developed. In this paper we extend this technique to devise algorithms for solving nonstandard inferences for EL and its probabilistic extens...
متن کاملNaive probability: a mental model theory of extensional reasoning.
This article outlines a theory of naive probability. According to the theory, individuals who are unfamiliar with the probability calculus can infer the probabilities of events in an extensional way: They construct mental models of what is true in the various possibilities. Each model represents an equiprobable alternative unless individuals have beliefs to the contrary, in which case some mode...
متن کاملA Logical Study on Qualitative Default Reasoning with Probabilities
Only very special subclasses of probability distributions can be used for qualitative reasoning that meets basic logical demands. Snow’s atomic bound systems (big-stepped probabilities) provide one positive example for such a subclass. This paper presents a thorough investigation of the formal logical relationships between qualitative and probabilistic default reasoning. We start with formalizi...
